The name Bieker may have come from the word Bieke in old German which stands
for Bach. Bach is a stream or brook. The name Bieker is older than any
written source (1400s) and the name refers to a person living near a creek
or small stream. A second story was that the name Bieker came from people
who traveled around fixing kitchen pots, pans and utensils. Bieker in
middle Germany is from the word Biegen. Biegen is to bend or shape.
The name Bieker was also spelled Biecker, Bicker, Bucker, Bycker, Boecker
and Bocker it in accordance to the current parish priest who recorded the
marriage, birth etc. The name may even have been Von Bieker? Bicker may have
had its roots in Amsterdam before 1100.
The search for the Bieker past is guided by records.
In 1563 the Roman Catholic "Council of Trent" mandated the keepijng of
parish registers for christening and marriage. Burial was mandated in 1614.
Russia mandated the keeping of registers in 1826. In Russia between 1719
and 1858, it is said that church records are not as reliable as revision lists
that were used to support a national poll tax. Russia took a census in 1897
that covered name, age, sex, relationship, social class, occupation, religion,
native tonge, literacy, birthplace, military status and disabilities.
The origin may be
Sauerland/Westphalia or Heddinghausen in Westphalia
in the district of Brilon, Germany. Or maybe Stausebach, Ohmes or
Amoneburg, Hessen, Germany as some have revealed.
The Bieker
Family Crest came for Hurbert Bieker born in 1636. It
is my understanding that only Biekers with a direct blood line to August my
make claim to this family crest.
